The natural sciences have been successful in de-mythologizing nature and society, explaining diverse phenomena like thunder, emotions and gravity with plain physical reasons. In a science-dominated culture, "spiritual" concepts like meaning, value and God seem archaic and hollow. Yet even as this view holds true for many secular observers, fresh scientific and philosophical inroads have been made to these spiritual concepts. Such positions re-interpret religious faith as an evolutionary factor. An English evening lecture by Prof. Dr. Hans Joas (Ernst Troeltsch Professor for the Sociology of Religion, Humboldt University of Berlin) discusses these new understandings of transcendence and evolution, drawing on the influential American position of Religious Naturalism.
