Established in 1971 during the first World Romani Congress, International Roma Day raises awareness of the ongoing challenges Roma communities face, including discrimination and social exclusion. Through cultural events, advocacy, and dialogue, International Roma Day promotes respect, inclusion and equality, contributing to a more just and diverse society.
To mark International Roma Day 2025, the Protestant Academy in Berlin, the Critical Film & Image Hub at the Research Centre on Antigypsyism (University of Heidelberg) and the Society for Antigypsyism Studies (GfA) are hosting a special screening of Housekeeping for Beginners (2023) by North Macedonian director Goran Stolevski.
The film premiered at the 80th Venice International Film Festival in September 2023, where it was awarded the Queer Lion. Furthermore, it was selected as North Macedonia’s entry for Best International Feature Film at the 96th Academy Awards (2024). Housekeeping for Beginners tells the story of a multi-ethnic queer family living near Shutka, an administrative unit of Skopje, North Macedonia’s capital, which has adopted Romani as an official language.

Der Internationale Roma-Tag würdigt jährlich am 8. April die reiche Kultur und Geschichte von Sinti* und Roma* weltweit. Der nordmazedonische Film Housekeeping for Beginners feiert die Vielfalt des Lebens. Mit ihm eröffnen die Evangelische Akademie zu Berlin und der Critical Film & Image Hub an der Forschungsstelle Antiziganismus der Universität Heidelberg in der Woche des Internationalen Roma-Tages unsere Reihe Ich sehe was, was du nicht siehst. Anlässlich des Internationalen Roma-Tags 2025 laden die Evangelische Akademie zu Berlin, der Critical Film & Image Hub an der Forschungsstelle Antiziganismus (Universität Heidelberg) und die Gesellschaft für Antiziganismusforschung (GfA) zu einem Abend mit dem Film Housekeeping for Beginners (2023) des nordmazedonischen Regisseurs Goran Stolevski ein.

Vahide Berisha is a dedicated educator and advocate for anti-discrimination and anti-Romani racism work. She began her career in public administration, training as a government clerk in Hamburg. Her experiences within the system—particularlythe negative ones—shaped her commitment to fighting institutional discrimination. In April, she joined Amarodrom as an Educational Consultant, where she focuses on raising awareness in schools. Through her work, Vahide bridges personal experience with professional expertise, empowering the next generation to challenge social injustice and build a more inclusive society.
Dr. Ismael Cortés. Member of the Advisory Board of the European Institute of Roma Art and Culture (ERIAC). Master in Philosophy from the University of Granada and PhD in International Peace, Conflict and Development Studies, Cum Laude with international award in the UNESCO Chair of Philosophy for Peace. During his academic career, Ismael has been a researcher at the School of Critical Theory and Cultural Studies at the University of Nottingham; at the Institute of Human Rights "Gregorio Peces-Barba" at the Carlos III University of Madrid; and at the Roma Studies Programme at the Central European University of Budapest. He has worked as a policy analyst for Brussels-based policy laboratories such as the Open Society European Policy Institute and the Centre for European Policy Studies. He has been a member of the Spanish Parliament (2019-23). He has coordinated the anthologies Dimensions of Antigypsyism in Europe (ENAR, 2019) and Antigitanismo. Trece miradas (Traficantes de Sueños, 2021). Author of the book Sueños y sombras sobre los gitanos. El presente de un racismo histórico (Bellaterra, 2021). He is currently a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Centre for Research on Antigypsyism at the University of Heidelberg and Associate Professor in the International Master's Degree in Peace, Conflict and Development Studies of the UNESCO Chair in Philosophy for Peace at the Universitat Jaume I.
